Instructions and Help about VA 26-4555

I waited a long time because I didn't think I needed help. But as I aged, the limits started to come on what I could do. Veterans my age, Vietnam Veterans in particular, as we age, there are huge changes in your life that this grant program can make life easier for you. My name is Jack Farley. I'm a Army Veteran; retired from the Army in 1970. I was a draftee. Went into the Army in 6/6/66, and then was sent to Vietnam in April 1968. And one night we were under attack and the enemy dropped a mortar round. A lot of shrapnel, lost a lot of blood. Took five pints just to get a pulse. I was put on a stretcher and spent two weeks in Japan, where the leg was officially amputated. I was medevaced from there to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. I've known about the SAH program. The grant wasn't something I thought about, only because I was living that normal life. But, I started thinking, “Hmm, I'm going to be in a wheelchair more often than I thought.” I had another rating, and the rating found me qualified for the SAH. And so all of a sudden now I have an SAH grant. A few years earlier, I met this beautiful woman. I'd known her since we were in seventh grade. We got in touch at a high school reunion. Things got more serious, so she said, “I'll move in with you. We can get married if you build me a new kitchen.” She's a superb chef. I knew this sounded great. When we agreed to get married, I told him. I said, “We have to have a different kitchen.” Because he said the kitchen is good. It wasn't good. That has made it much easier for us now. I mean, he can come into the kitchen any time....
